Getting more music students this spring

If you are a private music tutor, you should have probably noticed by now how music students come and go. Sometimes they fall in love with something, such as learning to play the guitar, and you have gained a faithful disciple for many years. And sometimes they just don’t commit to it and leave. There’s nothing wrong with it! After all, it is normal for kids to try new after school activities every year.

However, when your monthly income depends on
the music lessons you teach, you may feel urged to finding more students after
a long winter break that seems to last too long. And spring is a perfect time
of the year for getting more enthusiastic students! Temperature is rising,
daytime lasts longer, and everybody feels more optimistic… Let’s go get those
young musicians-to-be! Here are a few strategies that will help you get more
music students.

Spread the word

First things first: if you want to get more music students, you have to let the whole world know you are looking for more students! And that means you should talk to literally anyone you have the chance because you never know where you can find someone nearby who is interested in taking piano, violin, or singing lessons with you. Perhaps your next-door neighbor has a niece who needs extra credits for her college applications. Or a friend of a friend just got a cool guitar as a birthday present as is fantasizing about playing it although he’s already in his mid-thirties… Let everyone know that you, a great music instructor, are available!

Good old-fashioned flyers

You may believe printing your name and phone
number in a flyer together with a picture of a piano would be a waste of money,
but you’re wrong! In fact, flyers still catch attention from people such as
senior citizens, who are not used to digital content and may still have a
grandson or granddaughter who is willing to take music lessons. So part of your
strategy should include simple, black & white flyers you can later hang on the
windows and billboards of music shops, libraries, and schools nearby. However,
do not just hand them in one by one randomly, as it may not be as effective and
it is a waste of time and money.

The more, the merrier!

A great strategy for making more money as a music teacher is focusing on groups. Whether you start your own instrument assemble, a little orchestra in the local library, a rock band among your advanced students, or a choir, those working hours will be more profitable for you, and at the same time, very attractive to young people. Playing music in groups is fun! Indeed, instead of just learning to play an instrument they like, they will also make new friends that share their love of music and increase their social skills. Besides, music students who are part of a group are usually more engaged in their practice.

Offer opportunities to your current music

You may be looking for more music students this spring, but if you already have a bunch of them, they may be the best allies in your search! Let them know that you are looking forward to working more (we already stated above that you should talk to anyone, and that also includes them, of course!) You could offer them discounts in their future lessons if they bring someone else. A thrilled student who is engaged in your lessons will be more than willing to recommend you to all their friends!

Take advantage of social networking

Parallel to what we said before about old-fashioned flyers, social media platforms are, of course, a great way to get young people to know what you do. These days, any advertising campaign addressed to people younger than forty should include social media. And don’t constrain yourself to just one: Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, you should create professional accounts in all of them in order to reach an audience! However, try not to repeat the exact same contents on each network over and over: their users have different profiles, and you should aim to each of them:

  • In LinkedIn, your account should show your credentials, your formation, and your trajectory both as a musician and as an instructor. It is the best social network if you are also looking forward to teaching in schools or academies.
  • Facebook allows you to create and promote events, such as your students’ concerts and performances. Although statistics show that it is not as widely used as five years ago, it is still the most popular social network, so you should definitely have a page!
  • Instagram is the most popular social network among young people. Try posting fun, engaging content! This also applies to other social networks such as Tumblr or Snapchat, but do not overdo them: forget about puppy faces or bombing your followers with stories. Teenagers may not fall for that image of a “cool” teacher who is desperate to look like one of them.
  • Don’t forget about YouTube! It is very simple to upload little homemade videos once in a while. Your future students will appreciate short music tips as a sample of all they can learn once they join your music lessons. Just be careful with the copyright of the songs you may include in your content.

Join a community

Last but not least, if you are still not part of an online community of music instructors, now is a perfect time! It is great to have a webpage of your own, but online music communities have more traffic and offer you all kinds of advantages when it comes to promoting your services.
